Game Recap: Go Bills (4) vs Team Jay (2)

On Tuesday, July 14th, Team Go Bills played their eighth game of the 2009 Porter's Summer Slow Pitch Softball League and ended their three game losing streak with an inspiring defensive 4-2 victory. A positive note worth mentioning is the fan base that Go Bills experienced this past game as a record 4 fans that came out for the game. The team was very appreciative and would like to thank Mrs. Hirschfelt and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Sonnenberger for their support. All fans are welcome and Go Bills encourages each player to invite family and friends to this exciting atmosphere.

The game did not start off as hoped for offensively as the team continued their scoring drought, including 1st and 3rd "three-up, three-down" innings. Team Jay took an early 2-0 lead after the 1st, but Go Bills did not seem flustered despite their recent inability to manufacture runs. The team finally ended the nine-inning scoreless streak when Nick scored on a hit from Fabs in the top of the 4th inning. Go Bills continued their scoring stride by adding two more runs in the next inning. Eric S. lead off the inning with a single, followed by another single by his brother Bobby S., which scored Eric S. on a throwing error by the Center Fielder and Bobby S. advanced to third. There was controversy on the next play as Lester was called out at first on runner interference and Bobby S. was sent back to third base by the umpire after thinking he has scored on the play. It did not matter because Pat added a single of his own to score Bobby S. and Go Bills lead the game 3-2. Gary added the final run that Go Bills would score in the top of the 6th, and 4 overpowering runs would prove to be simply too much for Team Jay.

The real story of the game was Go Bills tremendous defensive display as numerous players made the routine, as well as spectacular (dare I say ESPN SportsCenter Top 10), plays. Mumbach pitched a gem and the team refused to lose another game and willed their way back to .500 on the year with a 4-4 record. The infield made no large errors and provided some highlights, such as McGee's backhand snag on the hot corner or Fabs scoop at first to punch out the speedy runner. The outfield performed impeccably as they did not make a mistake and kept Team Jay's runners honest the entire game.

While there is still several games left in the season, this was a momentous, as well as statement, game for Go Bills. They needed to get off the schnide and end their three game losing streak, but also show that they have the defense to win championships. Once the bats pick up and each hitter finds his groove, this team will prove to be very formidable in the playoffs with the type of stiff defense that they play.

Also, this was the 2nd of three-game-series against Team Jay this season and the 2nd win, thus gaining a psychological advantage over their opponent at this point with 15-14 and 4-2 wins, both times closing out the opponent as they batted in the bottom of the 7th.

The box score for Go Bills is nothing to write home about, but wins are far more impressive and important than any player's individual statistics. That being said, here are the statistics of the game:

"Jack Bobby" Fraser: 2-3, 2TB
Nick H. : 3-3, 8TB, R
Fabs: 2-3, 3TB
